The delegates gathered for the first debating session about women’s rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The DRC asked the other countries for help to improve the situations of women, especially regarding child marriage. Many countries promised their support for women’s rights, but some countries like Pakistan voiced their concern that the help could be abused to promote western culture and remind the countries that the sovereignty of DRC should not be harmed.
The US confused many countries with a statement about intervening against friends to protect them from harming themselves. This was Denied immediately after the statement.
Rwanda had a fierce debate with DRC about who is financing militias in the other country and stated their opinion that all money going to DRC will get used for military purposes. Rwanda continued by saying they should control all funds entering DRC. They retracted this after a quick comment by the chair. The DRC countered that the money should go directly to NGOs like UNICEF, so there is no possibility for the government to use it for other purposes, not that they intended to. Russia suggested that money entering the nation could be used to set up surveillance mechanisms to watch over their civilians to enforce laws.
The Chairs look forward to the next suggestions brought by the committee.
