IEUMUN Madrid 2025

9 delegates made their way to Madrid on the final days of October as part of PolyMUN, a joint delegation of ETHZ and EPFL to IEUMUN, a conference organized by IE University. The location was IE tower, the skyscraper of IE University, with an amazing view of Madrid, and it hosted over 400 delegates in 16 committees.

Most members of PolyMUN were new to MUN, but took on one of the biggest challenges any MUN delegate can face: Crisis. This Crisis simulated the start of the Iran-Iraq war, setting of in the Autumn of 1980, with 4 committees simulating the war cabinets of Iran and Iraq, as well as the Security Council (UNSC) and the Arab League (AL). In typical Crisis fashion, after 3 days of intense debate chaos ensued, most of the Middle East went to war (some on the side of Iran, some on the Side of Iraq), Kurdistan declared its independence, Iran and Iraq got nuked, and the UN has gone defunct.

The remaining 6 members of PolyMUN engaged in debate in Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) on the topic of “The Role of Emerging Media in Shaping Cultural Identity: Weaponizing Misinformation and Safeguarding Intangible Heritage”, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the topic of “Adapting the IMF to Global Economic Shifts: Evaluating Potential Reforms” respectively, and one of them reported on the action in the committees as a member of the Press.

Michael El Khoury (from EPFL) was rewarded and Honourable Mention by his Chairs in Crisis D (AL) as the representative of Quatar in his first ever MUN conference. We congratulate him on this achievement!
